                                                                              CANDLE SAFETY TIPS

                                                                              For Highly Scented Candles

                                                                              • Burn your candles on a sturdy, heat resistant and uncluttered surface.  Away from edges or any place where the candle could be accidentally knocked over.

                                                                              • Burn candles at least one foot away from anything that can burn, such as:  curtains, newspapers, clothing, bedding, flammable liquids, etc.

                                                                              • Do not place lit candles near windows or doorways where drafts could bring a combustible in contact with the flame.

                                                                              • Use candle holders that are sturdy, won't tip over easily, are made from material that cannot burn and are large enough to collect dripping wax.

                                                                              • Light candles carefully, keeping hair and loose clothing away from the flame.

                                                                              • Discontinue use of candle when ½” of wax remains at the bottom of the container.

                                                                              • Never burn candles unattended (it is easy to forget that you have one burning).

                                                                              • Keep out of reach of children and pets.  Burn your candle a safe distance away from the reaching hands of small children and/or your pets or where your pets may cross the path of the candle.

                                                                              • Store candles, matches and lighters up high and out of reach of children's sight and reach.

                                                                              • Don't allow children or teens to burn candles in their room.

                                                                              • Supervise children who are in a room with a burning candle or candles.  Don't allow children to play with any candle or the dripping wax.

                                                                              • Burn your candle for at least 3 hours during each burn or until the pool of melted wax is evenly across the container.  This promotes an even, clean burn each time you light the candle.

                                                                              • Remember to extinguish all candles before leaving the house or going to sleep.

                                                                              • Don’t use the lid to extinguish the candle... and try not to "blow" out your candles.  Blowing may result in splattered HOT wax.  Instead, use the ends of scissors or a wick dipper to bend the wick into the pool of wax to extinguish the flame.  This little trick also reduces the smoking of the wick and extends the burn time of the candle.

                                                                              • To avoid smoking or soot:
                                                                                • Always keep your wicks trimmed to ¼”
                                                                                • Burn candles away from drafts
                                                                                • Keep debris out of and away from candle, as this is also a fire hazard
                                                                                • Do not let your flame get higher than ¾”.  At that point, extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wick and relight
                                                                                • Use a candle shade or topper whenever possible, as the shade or topper tends to collect a good amount of the soot for you.

                                                                              • During the holiday seasons, keep candles away from Christmas trees, holiday decorations and/or flammable table centerpieces.

                                                                              • During power outages, use flashlights whenever possible.  Don't carry lit candles and do not use a candle for light when adding kerosene or any flammable fuel to a heater, lantern or other light or heat device.  The flame could ignite the fumes.
